Frequently Asked Questions

How old should you be to start have singing lessons?

Concentration is also important but I have been astounded by the talent of many 3 and 4 year olds in the past. So please keep encouraging your little ones and if they love to sing, then I would love to meet them.

Can you be too old to start singing lessons for the first time or start again after years of no training?

Again age is only a number. You are never too old to learn a new skill and in many cases maturity equal extreme focus and quicker results in terms of improvement and obtaining your goals. For those of you who used to sing some years ago and are looking to get their voice back in shape Speech Level Singing will give you the results you’ve always wanted.

How many singing lessons do I need?

The vocal chords are a muscle so training them is in fact very similar to going to the gym. The more you train them in a correct healthy way the quicker you will see results. Some vocal problems can be resolved in one or two lessons and some clients will come regularly, especially when they are preparing to go on tour or into a recording studio. Of course some clients come to improve their voice just as a hobby and this could be anything from once or twice a week to once a fortnight.

Do you teach all styles of music?

Yes. The technique I teach can be applied to all styles of music and I am happy to work with you on any songs you like be it pop, R'n'B, classical, opera, musical theatre or even rap!

I love singing but I think I’m tone deaf! Can you help?

Yes I can. Interestingly enough if you think you are tone deaf, you are more than likely not! A tone deaf singer is someone who unfortunately can’t sing in tune but truly believes he/she can. The fact you think you are out of tune means that you are more musical than you thought and through ear training and specific exercises your voice will definitely improve.

I have had singing lessons in the past with teachers who have failed to improve my voice. Why will I improve with you if I did not achieve results with them?

Trust me I understand your scepticism and frustration. I myself took many lessons and spent hard earned money on teachers who were truly a complete waste of time. This is why I can honestly say Speech Level Singing (SLS) is the only technique for singers. After only one lesson you will hear and feel a difference as SLS enables you to sing through all your bridges in a healthy connected and balanced tone. You will love the results.

Can you get me a record deal?

I would like to guarantee all of my clients a record or publishing deal. However, I do have a lot of contacts within the music industry and are often asked to put forward students for new projects!

I am a smoker will this affect my singing voice?

Well firstly give up! On a serious note, smoking does not prevent you from singing well and many successful singers are often seen out with a cigarette in their hand. But it does produce excess phlegm and in many cases give you a constant cough which sounds nasty and can over time harm the vocal chords.

What is a bridge?

A bridge is an area in both male and female voices where there is a shift in resonance. For an untrained singer these can be very noticeable when you sing but with SLS the vocal chords stay together and the larynx remains stable allowing the singer to sing through their bridges with ease. For a female voice the first bridge normally takes place at A or Ab above middle C (C4) but sometimes it is as low as G or F#. For a male voice bridges are normally at Eb or E and sometimes occurring either as low as D or as high as F# above middle C (C4).

What is vibrato?

Vibrato is often described as ‘an artistic fluctuation usually introduced purposefully by the singer, involving a change in pitch of +/- 0-3%, occurring 4.5-6.5 times per second at a rate of 4.5-6.5 Hz’. Bet you wish you hadn’t asked now!

Simply speaking, vibrato gives the voice a professional tone by adding richness, warmth stability and power. Vibrato is in fact the result of good technique, so do not worry if you do not have a natural vibrato in your voice as this can be helped. Sometimes you will see a performer sing and their chin will wobble as they force out a note with vibrato. This is often a false vibrato. I will teach you a healthy way to gain this sound putting no strain on the voice and using little effort.
